Full depth reclamation (FDR), also referred to as mix-in-place, is a process that rebuilds worn out asphalt pavement by recycling the existing roadway. The old asphalt and base materials are crushed using a specialized machine called a reclaimer. On top of this material, water is added to reach the optimal moisture content for compaction and then a variety of materials, such as asphalt emulsion or calcium are injected into the new base for stabilization. A reclaimer is used again to mix all the materials. After shaping and grading, the new base is compacted to produce a strong, durable base for an asphalt top layer.

Since this method recycles the materials, there is no need to bring in aggregate or remove old material for disposal.
